Jean-Baptiste CARPEAUX (1827–1875) - Lot 187
Jean-Baptiste CARPEAUX (1827–1875) Mater Dolorosa (finished), model 1869–1870 Terracotta, Height: 65 cm, Length: 47.5 cm, Depth: 34 cm Test cast signed "J.Bt Carpeaux," titled "Mater Dolorosa." Produced and published by the “Propriété Carpeaux” studio (stamp featuring the Imperial Eagle and number “1546”), stamp (Studio-Depot in Auteuil, 71 rue Boileau, Paris). Rare. Circa 1890 Provenance: private collection. We thank Mr. Alain Richarme for kindly confirming the authenticity of this work. MATER DOLOROSA It was as he was leaving the Church of the Trinity in late 1869 that Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux encountered his model “Jacintha” in tears. She had just lost her son. Deeply moved, the artist invited her to his studio in Auteuil, where, in two hours, he modeled the sketch for one of his most important clay busts, which he would later refine. This tragic work nevertheless contains an underlying sense of hope, evident in Jacintha’s expectant posture, her eyes turned toward the sky, ready to find new life. *La Mater Dolorosa* (sketch) is a perfect example of the artist’s virtuosity and recalls the expressive figures for which Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux displayed such talent while at the École des Beaux-Arts. While the sculptor was grappling with the scandal of the “Danse de l’Opéra,” the publication of the work proceeded with great momentum, as he had already sent a copy in March 1870 to the Salon des Amis de la Ville de Bordeaux (now housed at the city’s Museum of Fine Arts). Bibliography: Michel Poletti and Alain Richarme, *Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux: Sculptor*, a catalog raisonné of his published works, Les Éditions de l’Amateur, 2003. Page 136
