Jean-Baptiste CARPEAUX (1827–1875) - Lot 186
Jean-Baptiste CARPEAUX (1827–1875) "Genius of Dance with Love Run Amok," No. 3 From the "Dance at the Opera" group (1865–1869) Bronze with a richly nuanced brown patina Height: 54 cm, Length: 22.8 cm, Depth: 21.3 cm Cast signed “J.Bte Carpeaux,” dated “1872,” artist’s edition bearing the stamps “Propriété Carpeaux” and the Imperial Eagle. Circa: 1872 Provenance: private collection. We thank Mr. Alain Richarme for kindly confirming the authenticity of this work. GENIUS OF DANCE No. 3 “Within the series *La Danse* at the Opéra Garnier, *The Genius of Dance* resulted in one of the most successful editions, as it is the subject that best reflects the overall spirit of the group. Love run amok, leading the six Bacchantes, is enough here to capture the explosion of joy and the vitality of the genius. The slender physique of the Genie—that of a 20-year-old carpenter, Sébastien Visat—isolates and reinforces the movement’s original momentum. His face—that of the Polish princess Hélène de Racowitza—perfectly expresses the joy of the ensemble and, by lending the character an androgynous quality, imbues him with a unsettling dimension present throughout the entire group.
