Jean-Baptiste CARPEAUX (1827–1875) - Lot 184
Jean-Baptiste CARPEAUX (1827–1875) Shell Fisherman (large model) Bronze with a richly nuanced brown patina, Height: 89 cm, Length: 43 cm, Depth: 54 cm Signed "J.Bte Carpeaux," originally cast and produced by the studio, stamped "Propriété Carpeaux" and with the Imperial Eagle. Circa 1870 Provenance: private collection. We thank Mr. Alain Richarme for kindly confirming the authenticity of this work. FISHERMAN WITH A SHELL "This subject, the first work submitted by Carpeaux during his stay at the French Academy in Rome, was inspired by the gesture of a child he observed on a beach in Naples in 1856. It is a tribute to François Rude’s *Young Neapolitan Fisherman Playing with a Turtle* (1831 Salon), as Rude was his teacher; we also see the influence of Francisque Duret, his second teacher, in the young boy’s smile, which recalls that of *The Young Dancer Playing the Tarantella* (1833 Salon). Given the work’s success—the marble sculpture was purchased by the Emperor at the 1863 Salon—Carpeaux wished to retain the reproduction rights and capitalize on the model, which was first reproduced in bronze, then in terracotta and bisque. Faced with the difficulty of selling it in life-size, he asked Ferdinand Barbedienne in 1863 to have a version made at one-third the original size using the Collas process, for which this publisher held the exclusive rights.
