Elisabeth Sonrel (1974-1953) - Lot 414
Elisabeth Sonrel (1974-1953) Young girl at snack time Watercolor and graphite, signed lower left 49 x 57 cm (view), framed In excellent condition, framed under glass, it has been faded and examined out of frame, dimensions at sight Trained as an artist by her father from an early age, Élisabeth Sonrel grew up in a family environment conducive to an artistic career. As women were not admitted to the Académie des Beaux-Arts in Paris until 1897, she entered the Académie Julian in 1891 and became a pupil of Jules Lefebvre (1836-1911), a painter and teacher celebrated during his lifetime. Her subjects, mainly feminine, display two aesthetic qualities dear to the artist: tenderness and elegance. From 1893, she worked in Paris, and in 1895 moved to her own studio in Sceaux. She exhibited at the Salon between 1893 and 1941. In 1900, she won a bronze medal at the Paris Universal Exhibition. Although she enjoyed great success during her lifetime, she was soon forgotten. She was not rediscovered until the 1970s, and has since been considered one of the most important artists of French Symbolism and Art Nouveau.
