Miniature of a Ragamala, Kakubha Ragini - Lot 231
Miniature of a Ragamala, Kakubha Ragini Pigments and gold on paper North India, circa 1800 30.8 x 20.8 cm (painted page glued to base) Ragas were originally a complex medieval musical system designed to provoke a particular feeling in the listener (called rasa in the Indian world). Their melodies refer to an emotion, a state of mind or a mood, sometimes associated with a season, or a specific time of day, thus creating a story. Indian painters then transposed them into images combining painting, poetry and music, and compiled them into ensembles called ragamalas (literally "bouquets of ragas"). Deeply rooted in the Indian world, ragamalas were the subject of numerous variations by artists' studios from the 16th century onwards. Ragas are divided into families, themselves available in feminine (ragini) or masculine (raga) versions. Kakubha Ragini often feature a beautiful young woman in a landscape, holding flower necklaces and surrounded by peacocks. The victim of disappointed love, she leaves for the forest carrying flowers. The season often associated with this image is monsoon season. This miniature is framed in polychrome and gilded fillets, with margins decorated with flowers. (Wear) Expert: Alexis Renard
